tried to make my grandmother's gumbo recipe from memory this weekend. had to call her halfway through because i couldn't remember if the roux was supposed to look like chocolate or peanut butter. she laughed at me for a solid minute before answering. gumbo turned out solid though. she'd still find something to critique.
