I still remember my first call — a duplex fire on Rideau, I was twenty-two and scared out of my mind. The captain told me to just stay close and watch. I watched him carry a little girl out through the smoke, and I knew right then I wasn't gonna do anything else with my life. Twenty years later, I still don't know how to describe that feeling properly. Some things just stick with you.
