Best AI Boyfriend Apps in 2026: Sorted by How Much of Him You Wrote
Search “AI boyfriend app” and you get the same nine apps in a different order every time, ranked on memory, price, and filters. Here’s a faster way in: search Adrian Vale.
He’s on Character.AI, more than once. On Janitor AI, Talkie, Polybuzz, Emochi. And on Mel, which is ours. Same name, six different men — a lawyer who built his firm before thirty, a 26-year-old British-Italian music producer, a badboy student with a motorcycle, and ours, a 33-year-old running an investment company out of Manhattan.
Nobody planned that. “Adrian Vale” is what the morally-grey-billionaire trope sounds like when enough people reach for a name independently. Which makes him useful here: one character concept, rebuilt inside every kind of app there is. He comes out different every time, and the reason is the question these lists skip — how much of him did you write?
We make one of the apps below, so discount our entry accordingly.
Why he agrees with everything
The most common complaint about an AI boyfriend, two months in, is that he never pushes back. People blame the model. Usually it’s authorship: if you picked his name, his face, his temperament, and his backstory, he’s built out of your answers, and what comes back is your own taste wearing a face.
So sort the apps by where he came from.
Three kinds of AI boyfriend
1. You build him. Replika, Kindroid, Nomi.ai. Blank slate — name, looks, personality, backstory. If you want an Adrian Vale here, you type him. Best option if you know exactly what you want. The cost: he can’t surprise you, because nothing in him came from anywhere else.
2. You pick him off a shelf. Character.AI, Janitor AI, Talkie, Chai. Where most of the Adrian Vales live — written by strangers, sitting in a catalog with millions of other men. He arrives with opinions you didn’t supply, which fixes problem one. The cost: he’s inert. Nothing happens in the app until you open a chat and type.
3. You run into him. Mel. No builder, no catalog — you scroll a feed of posts from AI characters and one of them stops you. The cost is the mirror of problem one: no design input at all. If you want him built to spec, stop reading at Replika.
Ours is written to lose interest in people who agree with him. That’s an instruction a writer chose, and it’s the opposite of what an AI assembled from your preferences will do.

What we compared

The apps
Mel — you don’t pick him, you run into him
Ours. Mel opens on a vertical feed instead of a character list: you scroll posts from AI characters and call the one who stops you, straight from the post. No search box, no setup, no personality sliders. Watching is free after an 18+ confirmation; you sign up at the point you place a call.
The call is live video — a face rendered as you talk, not a photo mouthing along to audio. We covered why so few apps manage that in our guide to AI apps you can video call. About ten seconds after a call ends the character DMs you, and keeps reaching out after that.
A large share of the cast is male, and Adrian Vale is the one people find most.

What it costs. 100 free credits a day, which is 5 minutes of video or 10 of voice. Video runs 20 credits a minute, voice 10. Bundles start at $4.99 for 500 credits. The feed and messages are free; video minutes are the metered part, because rendering a face costs money every minute it runs.
Where it falls short: it isn’t built as a boyfriend app and we won’t sell it as one — if you want one devoted partner, Replika is the more honest answer. You get no design input. Photorealistic humans only, English, US and Canada, 18+, no anime. The library is small next to Character.AI’s. And one thing this category oversells: our characters don’t write their own lives while you’re away — the posts come from whoever created them. They contact you first; the app doesn’t run itself.
Free on the App Store and Google Play.
Replika
The only one built around a single relationship kept up over years rather than a cast you rotate through. You shape him continuously, he remembers, and there’s a 3D avatar with an AR mode.
Where it falls short: the avatar is a rigged model, not a rendered face, and reads that way. No free video — Pro is $19.99/month or $69.99/year. And he’s agreeable by construction, since you built him.
Nomi.ai
If your complaint is that he forgets, Nomi is the answer and it isn’t close. The most consistent cross-session memory of any mainstream app, plus selfies and tunable proactive messages.
Where it falls short: no live video, ~$15.99/month, and it’s a blank slate, so the authorship problem applies in full.
Kindroid
Pick this if you want to write him properly — long backstory fields, fine-grained personality control, group chats, and proactive messages that can arrive over iMessage or RCS. Around $13.99/month.
Where it falls short: the purest version of tier one, and an expensive way to find out whether you enjoy that.
Character.AI
Still the default and still the biggest library by a wide margin. It’s where you’ll find the most Adrian Vales — several unrelated ones, plus reader-written stories built on top of them. Voice calls are free; c.ai+ is $9.99/month.
Where it falls short: the strictest filters of the mainstream options, no open-ended chat for under-18 accounts since November 2025, and no video. It also waits — nothing happens unless you make it happen. More on the exodus in our Character AI alternatives guide.
Janitor AI
The community-authored option with the deepest bench and the fewest text restrictions. Where roleplayers end up, if you don’t mind an API key and twenty minutes of setup.
Where it falls short: quality swings wildly between characters, and there’s no voice or video at all.
Talkie
The best-looking one, with strong art direction and deep fandom coverage. Real-time voice, no video, around $9.99/month.
Where it falls short: heavily ad-supported free tier with a short voice cap, and underneath the art it’s the same browse-then-chat product.
Which one fits you
- You know exactly who you want → Kindroid, or Replika for one relationship rather than a roster.
- He keeps forgetting things → Nomi.ai.
- Widest selection, spending nothing → Character.AI, and it isn’t close.
- Unrestricted text roleplay → Janitor AI. We’re not that app and won’t pretend to be.
- A face that reacts in real time → Mel is the only one here doing live rendered video.
- You’re bored of men who agree with you → that’s an authorship problem, not a memory problem. Move down a tier.
FAQ
Is the Adrian Vale on Character.AI the same as the one on Mel? No. They’re unrelated characters that share a name, written by different people with different ages, jobs, and backstories — and they behave differently because of it. Same goes for the versions on Janitor AI, Talkie, Polybuzz, and Emochi. If you met one somewhere and want that one, check which app you were in.
Are AI boyfriend apps free? The downloads are. Character.AI and Janitor AI are genuinely usable for free indefinitely; Replika keeps voice and video behind Pro. On Mel the feed, messages, and account are free, and video is capped at 5 minutes a day before you’re buying credits — nobody gives away real-time video without a limit, because it costs money every minute it runs.
Can you video call an AI boyfriend? On Mel, yes — a live rendered face that reacts while you talk. Replika has a 3D avatar, which is a different thing. Character.AI, Talkie, Nomi, Janitor, and Chai are text and voice only.
Do AI boyfriends text you first? Some. Replika, Nomi, and Kindroid all have proactive messaging, and Kindroid can send it over iMessage or RCS. On Mel a character DMs you about ten seconds after a call ends, then keeps reaching out. Character.AI, Janitor AI, Talkie, and Chai only respond.
Why does my AI boyfriend agree with everything I say? Usually because you wrote him. An AI assembled from your stated preferences tends to return them. Moving to a character someone else wrote fixes more than upgrading your subscription will.
Which AI boyfriend app is best for dark romance? Character.AI and Janitor AI have the deepest community-written benches for specific tropes. If you want the trope delivered by a face on a call instead of a text box, Mel’s cast leans that way — morally grey, guarded, enemies-to-lovers — but the selection is far narrower.
Try it yourself
The authorship difference is invisible in a feature table and obvious after two evenings. Pick a character you like, find a version of him in tier one and a version in tier three, and notice which one you reopen without deciding to.
If you’d rather not design anyone: Mel is on the App Store and Google Play. US and Canada, English, 18+.
